Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924)
Frances Eliza Burnett was born on November 24 in the county of Manchester, England. She was five years old when her father died and she and her four siblings were raised by her mother. In 1965 they moved to Tennessee in the United States, where they continued as poor as they had been before. In order to help support her family, Frances began her writing career; however, her works were mainly directed toward the then-popular "Godey's Lady's Book" and other such publications. At the age of 24 she married Dr. Swan Burnett, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1898. In the space between, though, she wrote her much-loved "Little Lord Fauntleroy" and other lesser works, such as "Haworth's" and "A Fair Barbarian." After her divorce she remarried to Stephen Townsend, but this marriage, too, lasted only a few years. She did not marry again, but focused on her writing and her two sons, Lionel and Vivian. She lived the last years of her life in New York, and there died in October of 1924.
